In August, 2005, I took my first trip to Europe as we chaperoned a bunch of kids who were appearing in the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh. While we were there, we toured the ruins of the Holyrood Abbey. I shot this picture there. For many months, I used it as the desktop image on my [...]

An Assissi Epiphany

I hope there is no expiration date on travel postings. To me, more than half the fun of travel is the memories that you carry with you. Now that injury and illness has slowed me down a little, I have time to post a lot of pictures and memories from past travels. One of my [...]

In 2009, Kathy and I took a tour of Venice. Of course, one of the mandatory touristy things to do in Venice is to take a gondola ride.
A Lunch at the Louvre

I was loading some pictures from disks to computer this afternoon when I came across the photo I took at one of the cafes in the Louvre when we were there in 2007. The French have tucked these lovely easteries on a lot of the balconies in the old castle. That afternoon, the weather was delightful, [...]

Kathy and I returned two days early from our planned seven-day camping trip at Cloudland Canyon State Park. Cloudland Canyon is a park tucked away in the northwest corner of Georgia. In fact, you are actually closer to Alabama than Georgia. We came back because I had pegged out on the fun meter. While we [...]
Saturday and Charleston

On Saturday we decided to go to Charleston instead of the Beach. We had wanted to go to on a plantation tour, but when we arrived, we discovered that there some Scottish Highland Games were being held at Boone Hall Plantation. We didn’t want to spend the whole day there, and the tours were [...]

The Beach was wonderful. Since the children were all in school, this week turned out to be perfect. No crowds, great weather, and lots of sun. We spent four glorious days sitting on the beach doing nothing but reading, sleeping, and talking. It was raining on Friday so we took a break and went shopping.

I didn’t realize that it had been so long since I last blogged. I really have no excuse for neglecting blogging except laziness. Also, for a long time, I have hade anything earth-shattering to write about. You see, don’t you, how that last sentence validates the first, at least in my mind. Anyway, tomorrow, we [...]
A Week of Red Clay and Sand

When I decided to blog, I chose the title, “Red Clay and Sand,” because I had lived in the Sandhills of South Carolina and the red clay area of Georgia. Last week, I lived a real Red Clay and Sand Week. On June 5 and 6, Kathy and I attended the Georgia Mountain Roots and [...]
Venice: The Trip, The Novel, The Pictures

I had tried to read to read Michener’s The Source on the flight from Atlanta to Paris, but for some reason, I just couldn’t get into it. So, Kathy suggested that I go buy a book during the layover that we had in Paris on the return flight. I consequently wandered around DeGaulle airport finding [...]
