Nylon tents plastered the valley.
Children and grandchildren
buzzed around hives
of shared smoke,
tossing Frisbees
and punching Gameboys.
A wet cold dripped from the remaining leaves,
A blue fog struggled with nature’s
Red and gold and brown.
We were all dressed alike,
the leaves and the campers,
In hues long faded.
There were sandals everywhere,
Everywhere Birkenstocks,
Sloshed through mud
And trampled brown grass.
It was morning.
I wondered which mountain [...]

This weekend, I was reminded about how much I enjoy Merle Haggard and his music. Ken Nelson, one of Dave’s good friends, remarked that he had purchased a Merle Haggard CD at Cracker Barrel. He then asked me if I had ever heard of Josh Turner. I told him that I [...]
The Factory on Highway One

The smokestack and the water tower
Reflect sun on bright mornings
And swallow gloom on dim ones,
Remnants of the factory,
They stand
Like tombstones out of the pines.
Deserted factories have icons and altars,
Where men sacrificed their souls
Toiling in sweat, lint, and oil.
Their silence is a liturgy
To lives like threads spun into dresses,
Which are worn once,
And then passed down to [...]
Sunday After the Party

Kathy and I got back from Conway about four this afternoon. I hate that drive-the traffic on 501 going to and coming from (Hey, I’m proud that I used the prepositions correctly) Myrtle Beach is a real pain in the summer. Kathy’s son, Dave and his wife live in Conway, right outside of [...]
Sunday Afternoon Pensive

Today, a headline caught my eye: “Angry elephant kills man.” I clicked on the story and read where an elephant had turned on a man who had teased it, eventually killing the man. After smashing up some stuff for a while, it was eventually calmed by its trainer. Two things about that story [...]
The Notre Dame Cathedral at Chartres, France

One of the many “Notre Dame” Cathedrals is located in Chartres, a town about two hours by train outside of Paris. This Cathedral is beautiful and has a great guide who does a brilliant job of showing off the Cathedral and explaining a lot of the symbolism in the statuary and stained glass. [...]
The Tower Bridge

(I finally figured out how to upload pictures.) Kathy and I were scheduled to attend the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London the day I took this picture. We were wandering around the Thames waiting for nightfall when I saw the Tower bridge open, grabbed the camera, and took this shot. [...]
It’s Been a Long Time Since a Win

When I started blogging, I promised myself that I would keep my opinions on politics and religion to myself. I broke that rule once when I remarked on the Catholic Church calling all other denominations as “wounded.” Another time i made some comments on another blog and as deluged with comments from the [...]
Thursday – Another Day Closer

The superhuman effort continues-I am now on page 138 of Mere Christianity. Step-by-step, line-by-line, I am getting closer to that goal of finishing it.
Kathy and I got out of the house for awhile today. She had a meeting at the church and then we went out to eat before her doctor’s appointment. [...]
Another day reading Mere Christianity

I swear that I am going to make it all the way through Mere Christianity this time. I am slugging along (if that is a proper verb) and soon I will have completed Book Two, Chapter 4. I don’t know why, but Lewis’s writing is torture for me. However, I am going [...]
